Zhou Xun also admitted that earlier she won a lawsuit and donated the compensation to the United Nations for charity short film production.

Simon Yam wants to swap Awards with Aaron Kwok

Aaron Kwok Fu Sing was working on the Mainland film MUK GIK (WITNESS) in Beijing. Yesterday he returned to Hong Kong to attend the Prince Jewelry & Watch award. He won a singing and movie award. 'A Simple Life' sweeps Hong Kong Film Awards

HONG KONG — A heart-warming drama film depicting the relationship between an elderly loyal servant and her young master swept all the major categories of the Hong Kong Film Awards on Sunday.

"A Simple Life", which is based on a true story, scooped five gongs for best film, director, screenplay, actor and actress at the star-studded event considered Hong Kong's equivalent of the Oscars.

"I would like to thank Hong Kong," Ann Hui said after grabbing the best director award.

"I grew up here and I received my education here. This city has given me a lot of inspirations," she said during the glittering ceremony held at the harbourfront Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

The best actor and best actress honour went to the film's lead characters played by Andy Lau and Deanie Ip.

Ip, 64, played a servant who wants to move into a nursing home after suffering a stroke in "A Simple Life", a role that also won her the best actress award at the Venice film festival and Asian Film Awards.

"I only won this award in my 60s -- this could be the first and last time," she said in an emotional speech, referring to the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Lau, one of Asia's most successful stars who is branded by the media as one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Cantopop, was crowned best actor for the third time.

"This is an acknowledgement of my contribution to Hong Kong's film industry," Lau said to loud applause from hordes of cheering fans.

Tsui Hark's 3D extravaganza "Flying Swords of Dragon Gate", which starring Kung fu superstar Jet Li, led the race with 13 nominations and won five prizes.

It snapped up honours for best film editing, action choreography, art direction, sound design and visual effects.

The annual Hong Kong Film Awards -- celebrating its 31st edition this year -- is one of the two Chinese film's industry most prestigious events, alongside Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards.

The southern Chinese city which became an international movie powerhouse in the 1970s remains a rich source of film talent, with its stars enjoying huge popularity across Asia.

There have been increasing collaborations between Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland filmmakers in recent years to tap the lucrative market of movie-goers in China.

In recognition of the regional film industry, the award this year added the new "Best Film of Mainland and Taiwan" category-- won by the hit Taiwanese teen romance "You are the Apple of My Eye".

The low-budget film, which marked the directorial debut of popular novelist Giddens -- the pen name of Ko Ching-teng -- has generated a buzz around southeast Asia besides topping the box office in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Taiwanese singer Jam Hsiao, who rose to stardom through a TV reality show, won the award for best new performer for his role in "The Killer Who Never Kills", which is also based on a popular novel by Giddens.

A Simple Life won 2 awards at Okinawa International Movie Festival

Internationally acclaimed film – A Simple Life gained another recognition at Okinawa International Movie Festival held on 31 March as it was awarded Peace Category Uminchu-Award Grand Prix and the judges’ special award – Golden Shisa Award.

With regards to the award win, director Ann Hui is very thankful: “I believe that if people were to understand one another, the world will have peace. Hope A Simple Life will allow more to understand the lives of the elderly, understand their requirements. Once again thanks everybody’s support.”

When told of the wins, Andy Lau expressed: “What’s most delighting is: The message of love, really could moved everybody around the whole world.”

After winning her fifth Best Actress award with A Simple Life, Deanie was congratulate with loud applause from the audience as she was delighted. Eugene Domingo then requested a kiss from Andy as he oblign by a kiss on her cheeks, a delighted Eugene exclaimed: “I’m so happy tonight! I hope to collaborate with Andy in a film!”

When Andy and Korean actress Yoon Eunhye were giving out the Best Newcomer award, he openly say thanks to Ann Hui as he said: “Many thanks to Ann Hui to approach me for her film 30 years ago, allowing me to become a superstar”, Yoon Eunhye did not understand what he was saying and asked whom he was saying thanks to, Andy then quipped: “I say thank you to my wife!”

Andy and Deanie nominated for 31st Hong Kong Film Awards

Amigo Chui stutters in his comeback on stage at JSG Awards

Raymond Lam Wins 4 Awards at 2011 TVB8 Golden Melody Music Awards

JSG Awards says “bye bye” to HK Coliseum

For more than a decade, TVB’s annual “JSG Top Ten Awards Ceremony” took place as a ‘major event’ at the HK Coliseum. Our paper received word recently that this year’s (2011) JSG Awards will take place on January 14th, however the venue for the show will no longer be the HK Coliseum – instead, the event will take place in Studio One at TVB City. With the drop in attendance from over 10,000 audience members (HK Coliseum) to only about 700 audience (Studio One), the huge difference in the ‘grandeur’ of the event is very apparent. In the past, the JSG Awards used to be one of the ‘grandest and most important events’ in the HK Music industry, however now it seems to have become 'just another television program’ -- it’s no surprise then that the general impression of the JSG Awards is that it went from being a ‘big show’ to a ‘small show’!

According to reports, after Stephen Chan returned to TVB, his number one priority was to work with the Big 4 record companies to resolve the almost 2 year old royalty dispute. Though both sides had agreed on a compromise in terms of the royalty fees, the negotiations reached a stalemate due to TVB’s stipulation that contracted singers are not allowed to appear on other TV stations. With the Big 4 record companies standing firm and TVB refusing to budge on the issue, both sides could not come to an agreement; therefore, singers from the Big 4 record companies will continue to be ‘absent’ from the upcoming JSG Awards Ceremony. To ‘add salt to the wound’, many artists from the other record companies (non Big 4) have decided not to renew their singers’ contracts with TVB either, as they did not want to be tied down by the restriction of not being able to appear on other TV stations. With the decreasing number of contracted singers and only ‘their own people’ – EEG artists such as Joey Yung, Leo Ku, Raymond Lam, etc – backing them up, it is reported that TVB has decided to ‘cut back’ on production and move the JSG Awards to Studio One instead of HK Coliseum.

Also, according to reports, singer Miriam Yeung – who lost the “Most Favorite Female Singer” award to Joey Yung at JSG last year – won’t be attending the awards ceremony this year, due in large part to her record company being dissatisfied with TVB over the loss of the award. Even though Miriam’s singer contract with TVB expired over a month ago, she has not taken steps to renew with TVB, though she has continued to maintain a ‘friendly’ relationship with the station – so far, she has not appeared on other TV stations, plus she participated in one of TVB’s big charity shows «???????»which was held last week. In addition to Miriam, it was also reported that the contract for singer Janice Vidal, whose duet with newcomer JW won the “Golden Song” award at JSG last year, will expire early next year – rumor has it that due to disagreement over awards at the upcoming ceremony, there’s a possibility that she won’t be attending either.

In response to the reports of the JSG Awards taking place at Studio One instead of the HK Coliseum, TVB’s director of external affairs Tsang Sing Ming expressed: “Because the HK Coliseum is already fully booked, we are currently seeking out another location for the awards ceremony. If there is no other suitable venue, then Studio One will be the last resort." Asked whether TVB was ‘cutting costs’ due to the lack of singers, Tsang Sing Ming responded: “That has nothing to do with it. It’s just that we haven’t found a suitable venue yet, that’s all.”

Asked about the change in venue for the JSG Awards, Miriam Yeung stated: “Where the event takes place isn’t really important; the most important is the content of the program.” Multiple “Female Singer Award” winner Joey Yung responded: “Actually, where the event takes place isn’t too important; the important thing is that the awards are a recognition and encouragement to the singers for their efforts in the past year.” Last year’s “Asian Region Favorite Male Singer” award winner Raymond Lam commented: “Actually, the venue isn’t the most important.
