The 6th Asian Film Awards was held at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre last night, Deanie Ip bagged her fifth Best Actress award for her performance in A Simple Life. Andy Lau who was nominated for Best Actor with the same film lose out to Indonesian film – Lovely Man’s Donny Damara, however he won the support of netizens to win “My Favorite Actor” award. Iran film – Nader and Simin, A Separation was the biggest winner as it won Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenwriter and Best Editor, a total of 4 awards followed by Wu Xia with 3 awards.A total of 14 awards were presented, Ann Hui won the Life Achievement Awards, Indonesia’s newbie director Edwin to Receive the Edward Yang New Talent Award, Top-Grossing Asian Film Award is Let the Bullet Fly and the online voting of My Favorite Actor and Actress went to A Simple Life’s Andy Lau and The Woman in the Septic Tank’s Eugene Domingo.
After winning her fifth Best Actress award with A Simple Life, Deanie was congratulate with loud applause from the audience as she was delighted. She delivered her thank-you speech in Mandarin, Cantonese and English, “I always wish to be in a good film, to be able to be cast in such a good film like A Simple Life, I feel that it’s my honor. Especially wanted to thank director Ann Hui, without her support and trust, I won’t be able to be in this film, I also wanted to thank Andy, he’s such a cute guy, sometimes his good acting was neglected because of his good looks, no matter what, I love him very much, Darling!” Deanie expressed that she was disappointed that Andy missed out on the Best Actor award, but she think that everybody stands an equal chance, she currently does not have any filming plans because she wanted to go to Australia to catch the moon’s total eclispe.
Andy and Eugene Domingo from the Philippines whom won the My Favorite Actor and Actress also did snatch the limelight. Andy gave his thank-you speech in Mandarin before repeating it in English: “Delighted that I’m presented this award, but winning this awards make me fear that I don’t have the chance to win the Best Actor award. Thanks everybody’s support all these years, I just rushed over here from another award presentation ceremony, luckily I managed to make it and collect the award personally, I’ll be delighted to win an award everyday, hope that awards will continue to be presented to me.”
Before Eugene Domingo collect her award, she whipped out her mobile phone and walked towards Andy: “I waited for 25 years to be able to take a photograph together with Andy.” Andy showed a “V” (victory) hand sign when taking the photograph. Eugene Domingo then requested a kiss from Andy as he oblign by a kiss on her cheeks, a delighted Eugene exclaimed: “I’m so happy tonight! I hope to collaborate with Andy in a film!”
When Andy and Korean actress Yoon Eunhye were giving out the Best Newcomer award, he openly say thanks to Ann Hui as he said: “Many thanks to Ann Hui to approach me for her film 30 years ago, allowing me to become a superstar”, Yoon Eunhye did not understand what he was saying and asked whom he was saying thanks to, Andy then quipped: “I say thank you to my wife!”
