12 endangered Indonesian tigers caught in videos (AP)

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Video cameras in western Indonesian forests have captured 12 endangered Sumatran tigers in just two months — a number wildlife activists called astonishing.

The giant cats are on the brink of extinction because of the destruction of forests, poaching and clashes with humans. Their numbers have dwindled to about 400 today from 1,000 in the 1970s.

WWF Indonesia set up the video cameras in forests scheduled to be cut down for plantations on Sumatra island. It said capturing a dozen tigers in such a short period was astonishing.

The videos show two mothers strolling across a clearing with their cubs. Later, three cubs playfully chase a leaf. Another group strays into view during a night shot.
