Last week, Jacqueline Law and her businessman husband Lau Chi Mun attended the wedding of their friend Adrian Lee at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Hong Kong. During the event, Jacqueline looked to be in good spirits and didn’t seem tired at all – even when she saw the Media present, she maintained her usual smile, though the reporters noticed that she had lost a lot of weight and was also wearing a wig. The reporters did not get a chance to interview her before she hurried into the event.
Actually, Jacqueline was already feeling ill in June of last year – at the time, she was attending a movie premiere and it was reported that she looked thin and tired. At the time, Jacqueline had revealed that she was experiencing some digestion problems and for some reason, constantly felt like she had heartburn, even during the times when she hadn’t eaten anything – she consulted a few Western doctors, but unfortunately they were not able to make any diagnosis, so she switched to Chinese doctors. Because of the digestion problems, it was difficult for her to swallow, so at that time, she had already lost 7 pounds.
According to a few of her close friends, when Jacqueline discovered the seriousness of her illness, she was lucky that her husband immediately sought medical help for her and she started chemotherapy right away – currently, her illness is already under control. It was also reported that her close ‘sister’ friends such as Sheren Tang constantly kept her company and went with her on doctors visits, which helped her to cope with the illness on an emotional level. Jacqueline’s illness has not stopped her from attending Church with her family and friends every week.
Yesterday, our reporter contacted Jacqueline in an attempt to clarify the matter, however she did not answer her phone. A few hours later, she responded back to the reporter with a text message: “Thanks for your concern! Praise God! His grace is enough for me, whatever the situation, continue to serve effectively and positively and those who love God will benefit! Jacqueline.” Through her response, Jacqueline expressed that everything is fine with her and helped to ease some of the concern that many had towards her illness.
When Jacqueline’s good friend Louie Castro was asked about her rumored illness and treatment, he responded: “I’m an outsider – since it is her personal matter, I should not be responding on her behalf. We do get together quite often and I personally thank everyone for your concern and well wishes – I will definitely let her know.” (How is the situation with Jacqueline’s health currently?) “I believe she is OK.” (Emotionally OK as well?) “Also OK. But let Jacqueline decide for herself whether she wants to say anything about it. As a friend, my concern is primarily for her to be healthy.”
As for Jacqueline’s other good friend Annie Liu, she expressed that she has not been in touch with Jacqueline as much the past few years, so she was shocked to hear such rumors. Annie expressed that she will personally call Jacqueline to understand the matter. Even though they have not been closely in touch, Annie indicated that she has not heard anything about Jacqueline being ill – she has only heard through mutual friends that ever since Jacqueline partially lost her hearing due to the diving incident, she has avoided going to places that are too noisy.
Jacqueline Law started her career at TVB in 1987 and really became known after her strong performance in the series "The Legend of the Book and the Sword" (TVB’s 1987 adaptation of Jin Yong’s novel). The next year, she collaborated with comedian/actor Stephen Chow in the series "The Final Combat", during which time the two started dating – until the pair broke up 4 years later, the relationship was widely considered an ‘underground romance’. During an interview in 2009, Jacqueline recounted her relationship with Stephen, indicating that the most painful aspect of their romance was that she had to lie and was not allowed to talk about their relationship in public, especially in front of the Media. In addition, she also revealed that from the year 2000 to 2004, she suffered from depression to the point that she had thought about committing suicide, but luckily she was able to overcome it. Afterwards, she met her current husband (Lau Chi Mun), who helped her re-start her life anew.
