Wong Cho Lam has got himself a reputation that he's a comedian. As for his recent series Super Snoops was criticized for not being funny, he frankly expressed that is pressuring. He sighed and said a comedian's life is shorter than a tragic master.
(Wong Cho Lam speaks...)
At first when I was working on Super Snoops, I just saw myself to have one rotten life. Later, everyone expected the Fuk Luk Sau (FLS) that we must be funny and it was then when I discovered my own deficiencies. Honestly speaking, I thought I wasn't funny either! It's interesting, when everyone comes and praises you, even a saint forgets modesty, and neglect to listen to opinions of others....When I was nothing at all, I only wanted to do everything I could to make audience laugh. But now, I assume that I'm already really funny before I go out to perform, this is in fact a little like putting the cart before the horse. I hope to restore the fundamentals and find that energy I had in the past, and just give everything I got to make people laugh.
Flowers cannot be red forever, a comedian is like this too. Tragedy, you can watch until 60 years old, but the tide changes every few years for a comedy. It is easiest for a comedian's career to end their 'fresh period'. I am not afraid to be anyone's replacement or be eliminated, but I just fear I may forget that a comedian must use sincerity to be able to touch people. I do not dare to use 'comedian' to describe myself, but since I decided to be funny, I do indeed have my own stress. I have to always remind myself that I am competing against time, information, the expectation of audience and several other variables.
Looking back at Super Snoops, I feel the greatest problem was compared to a having a week to prepare a FLS variety show, we only had 1 day to complete 1 episode of the series. This is clearly a lack of time issue. Also, series are much more complicated than variety shows. Generally speaking, more time is needed for preparation....so if there is an opportunity to shoot another FLS series in the future, I hope to put more time and thought into the production.
Epilogue: Enduring sleepless nights to show care for others
This exclusive interview was completed several months ago. Initially, we wanted to wait until Wong Cho Lam goes to the U.S to meet the parents before we publish the article, but this 5 day interview could be summed up with Cho Lam's one comment: "I absolutely will not talk about Leanne Li." Cho Lam's love is nothing special, but he is very devoted to his acting career. He also severely lacks sleep: "This place indeed makes me wanna sleep." The touching part is that he is willing to sacrifice his sleep time (overnight) to comfort a friend. The author has also been one of his beneficiaries.
