Lives of Omission to Air on August 1st

TVB series, Lives of Omission "????" held its prayer ceremony. Cast members, Michael Tse (???), Bosco Wong (???), and Fala Chen (???) attended the event. The Producer announced that Lives of Omission will be broadcast on August 1, 2011 in Hong Kong. Photos of Michael and Bosco holding guns were distributed.

Allegedly, TVB requested Bosco to extend his management contract by eight years for fear of mainland companies luring artists with higher salaries. Bosco said, “There are a few years left in my contract. I have not thought about it yet.” (You were offered a leading role in a new movie?) “I don’t know if the project will truly start production. However, I have already committed to filming two movies.”

Moses Chan (??), who recently filmed a swimming trunks ad, said he will lose out to Bosco. “It’s okay to film in swimming trunks or underwear ads.” (Will you sacrifice for the sake of art?) “If the script were good, then there is value in the exposure.” Bosco mentioned that he did not mind revealing himself onscreen in a manner similar to Tony Leung.

Cecilia Cheung finally breaks her silence and responds to divorce rumors; bursts out at Nicholas Tse: “Stop pretending to be a good man!”

Nicholas Tse and Cecilia Cheung’s marital woes have been at the forefront of entertainment news from Hong Kong to Taiwan to China for the past month. Despite the multitude of rumors that have been flying around, up to this point, neither party had come forward to address the rumors or confirm if the marriage is truly ‘on the rocks’. In the past month, Cecilia has been ‘attacked’ with negative publicity, with rumors abound of her being a gold-digger, overbearing, troublemaker, using her sons to threaten her husband, etc.—all meant to paint her in a bad light. Despite the negative rumors, Cecilia has kept silent out of concern for her children – but now, after 24 days of silence, she feels that she cannot continue to suffer in silence and so has decided to come forward and reveal her husband’s ‘true colors’.

The day before yesterday, Cecilia Cheung – accompanied by her younger brother Ronnie Cheung as well as her manager Emily – left the HK airport and headed for Germany to fulfill work obligations. Yesterday, she accepted an exclusive phone interview with our paper (Oriental Daily) in which she breaks her silence and responds to various rumors that have circulated up to this point.

Ever since Eileen Cha revealed in her radio show back on 5/30 that Cecilia has been “squeezing Nicholas Tse’s $500 million personal fortune dry” and portrayed her as a gold-digger as well as troublemaker, there have been rumors that Nicholas Tse’s mother Deborah Lai, who is good friends with Eileen Cha, was the source of information for Eileen and gave her ‘authorization’ to speak about the couple’s marital issues. This was a natural ‘conclusion’ drawn by the public due to Deborah’s rocky relationship with her daughter-in-law Cecilia – however, in our exclusive interview, Cecilia reveals her staunch belief that her own husband Nicholas Tse was Eileen Cha’s true ‘source’!

R = Reporter
C = Cecilia

R: Why do you feel that Nicholas is the person who provided Eileen with the information?

C (speaking calmly): I’ve been married to him for 5 years and have known him since I was 18 years old – of course I know what type of person he is! All this time, he has always projected the image of being ‘cool’ and ‘suave’, wearing his sunglasses all the time and such. I once asked him why he always wears sunglasses, to which he replied that with the sunglasses on, people can’t tell whether he is lying or telling the truth! So him getting ‘Best Actor’ is truly ‘deserving’ then!

R: Other than knowing him for 13 years and being married to him for 5 years, what other specific reason do you have for believing that Nicholas is the ‘source’ of all the negative information out there about you?

C (starts to become slightly agitated): A lot of things only the two of us know about -- conversations that we had between the two of us as husband and wife that a third party has no way of knowing. Nic’s relationship with his mother Deborah has never been good – when he accepted the award for Best Actor and didn’t thank his mother onstage, Deborah got really upset and complained to Eileen Cha the next day. After that, Deborah stopped staying in contact with us and stopped coming to our house, therefore she did not know that I had moved to Yeung Ming Shan Chuang and definitely did not know how much rent I was paying – so how was Eileen Cha able to reveal that information? It’s obvious then who the true ‘source’ of the information was! This method of ‘using someone else’s knife to kill someone’, causing 2 women [Cecilia and Deborah] to be endlessly ‘attacked’ by the public and Media and not doing anything about it – this is absolutely despicable! If there was something that he needed to say, why not just come out and say it? Why be so sneaky?

R: It’s been almost a month since Eileen Cha revealed all that in her radio show – from that moment until now, there has been a lot of negative reports related to you. Why did you continue to keep silent all this time?

C (sounding helpless): The reason why I’ve been silent up to this point is because of my children. I didn’t want my 2 sons to grow up in a broken, single parent family – but he [Nicholas] did not appreciate it! Even up until yesterday, right before I got on the plane, he was still secretly ‘releasing’ information to the public! I truly couldn’t stand it anymore and felt that I needed to come out and say something!

R: Have you been in contact with Nicholas?

C (stating without hesitation): I haven’t been able to get in touch with him for the past month or so. Before I boarded the plane to come here, I used a phone without caller ID to call Cousin [Nic Tse’s assistant]; I told him to tell his boss that if he continues to secretly release false information to the public like that, I will not tolerate it any more! There is a lot of stuff that only the two of us [Cecilia and Nic] know about – if he continued his tactics, then I will reveal his true colors to the public and let everyone know who Nicholas Tse truly is! I told him to stop pretending to be a good man, good husband, good father!

R: In your opinion, how is Nicholas as a father?

C: He’s never cared much about the kids. Whenever he’s at home, it’s like the kids are invisible to him – he pretty much ignores them! The only reason he wanted me to have kids was so he could tie me down – he actually doesn’t even like children!

R: Back to your conversation with Cousin…so after you told Cousin that you won’t tolerate it any more and would reveal your husband’s true colors, what was Nic’s reaction?

C (slightly agitated again): I could hear him next to Cousin, yelling out: “Go ahead and (expletive) talk about me! I worked so hard to make the public have a bad image of you, let’s see who the people are going to believe!”

R: Is it because of those words that you decided not to keep silent anymore?

C (angrily states): Yes! It is precisely because of those words that I decided not to keep quiet anymore! I felt I needed to come out and say something!

R: Why would Nicholas attack you like that?

C: Because he doesn’t want me to get any of his assets, so he made it look like I was crazy for money – but the reality is far from that! I don’t need to rely on him [financially] at all! Money is not that important to me – if have more, spend more, if have less, spend less. Plus, it’s not like I don’t have any money at all! Even if I’m no longer in the entertainment industry, I still won’t have a problem!

R: With the situation getting to the point that it has, are you guys truly getting a divorce?

C (helplessly expresses): I’ve stayed silent for so long in order to preserve my family and for the sake of the children. Whether we will be divorcing or nor can be taken up later – right now, at this moment, my only intention is to reveal Nicholas Tse’s true colors!

Cecilia Cheung's side claims Nicholas Tse forcing her to divorce

Cecilia Cheung has recently been seen playing with her sons, yesterday after flying to Germany, Blackie Chen's former agent andygaga (good friend of Cecilia Cheung for 17 years, was Blackie Chen's agent, now is Cecilia's assistant) went online and posted a revealing article. The article claims, since the rumours of a divorce came out, not only has Nicholas Tse not called Cecilia Cheung, he even sent a solicitor's letter to ask to see his two sons, the aim is to "force Cecilia to ask for a divorce".

"Right now the newspapers are reporting different new every day, Zha Xiao Xin reveals this and then Deborah says that. Actually Nicholas Tse is using his mother's mouth to say what he wants to say, the aim is to force Cecilia to ask for a divorce, then he can continue to play his good father, good husband role." Directly implying that Nicholas Tse is pushing all the blame onto Cecilia Cheung. "He would rather type a solicitor's letter to see his two sons instead of calling his wife, what's the aim? It's to force Cecilia to ask for a divorce! Also, Deborah has been telling people Cecilia doesn't have the right to get the two sons, she says the two sons have Tse surnames and so belong to the Tse family and that Cecilia was only responsible for birthing them."

Then Cecilia Cheung's agent also spoke, she pointed out the smear campaign by the Tse family: "Everyone has a limit, it's useless for only one side to keep silent wanting to protect the family, at the end she only gets hurt by the Tse family every day, it's terrifying!"

Roger Kwok says Sunny Chan has always been noisy

Sunny Chan and Roger Kwok are arguing every day in TVB new series Wax and Wane. Sunny is often pulling his throat when he's showing anger, it's rough and too over. He was named 'The Second Alex Man' by Netizens. Yesterday Roger, Sunny and Ron Ng attended the series promotional event. Roger directly said he felt Sunny was 'very noisy': "He has always been like that! It's not now that he's rough and noisy, since I was shooting Threshold of an Era with him, I gave him 10 years. I told him before don't talk so much, don't be so noisy. (Did he listen?) If he did, there won't be a situation like this today. (His scenes are going to be cut?) Perhaps there are going to be some changes, in fact the series is already getting into the climax, this series needs time to heat up."

Suny stressed that he's just doing what the script requires him to and got agreement by the director. Watching again, does he feel there is a problem in his performance? He said: "I rarely watch playbacks of my own scenes, the director says it's fine, then that works. (Said your the Second Alex Man?) I really don't know, I don't dare to say! (Roger said your noisy too!) Haha...perhaps that's just my nature and character. Roger never told me."

Roger's wife Cindy Au is expected to due in October. Asked if he would compete with Raymond Cho for ligation surgery endorsements? Roger said: "I won't have kids, won't have to do the surgery. I can do condom endorsements." As recently there has been an outbreak of the scarlet fever, Roger said he will pay more attention to his son's health.

As for Ron, rumored girlfriend Kate Tsui did not attend because she was ill. Asked if Kate fell ill because of his relationship with Viann Zhang? Ron said, that won't happen because they are just colleagues.

Hayate combats netizens’ criticisms

Last weekend, the manga adaptation “Hayate the Combat Butler” joined the Sunday idol dramas battle. Despite having a preexisting fan base from the manga/anime, netizens criticized lead actress Park Shin-Hye of being too chubby and George Hu of not being girly enough, veering away from the original characters too much.

“Hayate” is GTV’s first of its three collaborations with Korean actors and actresses; GTV chose Park Shin-Hye for the lead role in “Hayate” and the drama is already selling well overseas due to her popularity from the previous hit Korean drama, “You’re Beautiful”. However, after the first episode, fans expressed that they still couldn’t accept Park Shin-Hye in the role and were also displeased with the dubbing of her voice, commenting that it sounded too cartoon-ish.

Netizens also thinks that George Hu is too buff and manly and suggest that GTV should change the drama’s name to “K.O. Butler” to save itself from the criticisms. Collective fans of the original manga series have even created a haters’ facebook page for the live action; it linked a video which wrote, “What is this?.. Taiwan has never done well in adapting a Japanese manga…If you only want to watch good-looking guys and pretty girls in an idol drama, please get lost!”

Nonetheless, “Hayate” managed to pull in 1.27% in ratings (increased 0.5% from its predecessor). Amidst the debate between the manga fans and its viewers, some netizens commented, “It was really funny! Since I’ve never read the manga, I’m not going to compare it.” Other supporters said, “…Why are some people so selfish and keep saying that it has to be the same as the original? Why don’t they just cosplay and act in it themselves?”

GTV responded yesterday stating that although the drama is an adaptation, the production needs to keep the audience in mind. Since the butler (Hu) needs to protect his Missy (Park), by logic, he should be fit and strong. As for Park Shin-Hye, GTV believes her lively portrayal of the character can definitely satisfy the majority of the viewers.

Although losing 0.6% in ratings from the previous week, “Love You” continued its lead with 4.39%. “Mei Le, Go” followed in second with 1.56%. “Material Queen” debuted on Friday with less than 1%. Industry experts pointed out that there is an overall decline on last week’s idol drama ratings due to final exams.

Tavia Yeung plays a cardiologist, need to learn proper surgical knife handling

Tavia Yeung, Kenneth Ma, Him Law and Mandy Wong attended TVB new series 36 Hours On Call costume fitting yesterday. Tavia joked that recently her 'career' has been changing a lot. She has now been a lawyer, doctor and teacher before, breaking 'the girl next door' image. Tavia said: "This time, it's pretty stressful because I'm portraying a cardiologist. I will first have to learn the ways to handle a surgical knife and electric drill before I can do it. When the time comes, there will be medical personnel around to supervise the set."

It was said Tavia will have to 'lead the newcomers' in this series, she said: "I don't think so, they have their own specialties. Actually, I have pressure when I put on this doctor's jacket, can't put up a surgical knife like I'm a kid. I have to learn about first aid and how to handle emergencies otherwise people will tease that I'm not professional." As one of the cast, Marcus Tin, was said to have worked as a doctor in the ER, Tavia expressed if she doesn't understand the language, she will ask him.

Tavia will soon be in court to testify on TVB General Manager Stephen Chan's corruption case. She said: "I want to get there early, and gossip about the prices other artists get to attend shows! (Hear about Mr. Chan's cohabiting relationship too?) I am just going to provide information about the jobs, other things I probably won't have the chance to listen. Besides, his personal business is not related to me."

Kenneth Ma also does not believe he'll be 'leading the newcomers'. He said: "In the series, there are many doctors in training, and TVB also needs new faces, so audience can have more choices." Kenneth will be playing a neurologist, he laughed: "Luckily, I'm a neurologist because I heard gynecologists have it miserable, and they lose all their 'feelings'! In the series, I have a relationship with Tavia and Mandy Wong. I even have intimate scenes with Mandy, thanks to the Producer that I get to kiss another new co-star."

Him Law was a guest for the Miss HK outdoor shooting earlier, and it was said he stole the contestants' limelight? He laughed: "Looking at the report now, it's not too bad. I wasn't said to have made mistakes, this time I'm just assisting the contestants for the shoot."

Stephen Chan pockets TVB FaDans' earnings, asking them to attend events as his 'friends'

TVB General Manager Stephen Chan's hearing for his corruption case was held yesterday. The prosecutor reveals that in February of 2010, Stephen had both 'public and private uses' when he held his new book press conference. On the sponsor's contract, there was a set price to be paid to the TVB FaDans for attending the event as his guests. However, he hid this fact from the FaDans and just 'patted shoulders' asking the FaDans to participate in the event as his friend. As a result, the FaDans helped Stephen embezzle HK$300,000 of sponsor fees.

The prosecutor's representative, an experienced lawyer (Kwok Tung Ming) reveals yesterday that there are temporarily 58 witnesses to testify on the list. The prosecutor will first summon the sponsoring company's staff to the stand. Next, TVB executives, the 5 TVB FaDans (Charmaine Sheh, Sharon Chan, Tavia Yeung, Shirley Yeung and Skye Chan) and Wayne Lai will be summoned. It is estimated that the climax of the case will appear next month.

On March 11th, Stephen (age 51) was arrested with Idea Empire Advertising & Production Co. (Idea Empire) Director Edthancy Tseng (age 28) for corruption and conspiracy to defraud TVB by the ICAC. According to the prosecutor, at the time of the arrest, Chan was in his duplex unit apartment on Argyle Astrid street with the others who were arrested. This led to cohabitation suspicions.

When the hearing started, the Prosecutor pointed out that when Chan is out doing any type of public jobs, as TVB's General Manager, no matter what the fees are, he must report in writing to TVB for approval. Late 2009, Olympian City II Management Limited collaborated with TVB on the Olympian City Countdown to 2010 Spectacular show. Olympian City spent HK$1.3 million on sponsoring the show and requested for Chan and Wayne Lai to participate in the Be My Guest segment of the show. TVB agreed to this arrangement.

Meanwhile, Olympian City II bid another HK$160,000 through Idea Empire to hire Chan and Wayne Lai for the related segment of the show. When that segment in the show ends, Idea Empire will give HK$112,000 to Chan. However the Prosecutor said Chan never applied to receive that amount of money, while TVB did not know about Idea Empire and Olympian City II's agreement with Chan.

The Prosecutor also said Idea Empire published the new book Stephen 14.2 First Choice early last year (2010) and on February 7, 2010, the press conference was held in Olympian City. In December 2009 through February 2010, Chan started asking TVB artists Charmaine Sheh, Tavia Yeung, Shirley Yeung, Sharon Chan, and Skye Chan to attend Stephen's events for free, like the press conference for his new book; They were to attend the event as a friend of Stephen's and receive no pay. TVB Production Resources Director Virgina Lok agreed and allowed the 5 FaDan to attend the event.

But in reality, Idea Empire had already signed a contract with Olympian City on December 24, 2009. Idea Empire will ensure Olympian City appoint Charmaine, Tavia, and Shirley to attend the event as a condition for Olympian City to provide the space for free. Also, Idea Empire and Mabelle Diamond established an agreement that Mabelle will invest HK$300,000 to fund that event, but Charmaine, Tavia and the other FaDans must attend the event as a condition for their funds. TVB and the 5 FaDans did not know anything about their agreement.

Also, Edthancy and TVB's Business & Marketing department head, Wilson Chan (age 63) successfully got Melco PBL Jogos Hotel to spend HK$5.2 million to sponsor TVB's JSG Singer Anniversary 2009. However, they reported to TVB that Melco only sponsored HK$4.65 million. They also provided assistance to Idea Empire as well, asking Melco and TVB to provide HK$690,000 and HK$550,000 respectively to help fund Idea Empire's event logistics and transportation services. When the event ended, Wilson Chan demanded Melco to pay HK$5.89 million to Idea Empire. Idea Empire deducted the HK$690,000 and HK$550.000 from the sum and gave the remainder HK$4.65 million to TVB as the Melco sponsor fee.

Nicholas Tse and Charlene Choi have chemistry

Currently Nicholas Tse Ting Fung is working on THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN) in Kuala Lumpur. For better sound recording and preventing actor disturbance from the crowd, the crew earlier put up boards around the set. On Sunday, Ting Fung will fly to Beijing to promote the Wong Jing film TREASURE INN (CHOI SUN HAT JANG). Because THE VIRAL FACTOR was heating up in its production, Ting Fung had to return on the same day. Reportedly Ting Fung would answer questions about his marriage at the press conference, fans even secretly formed "Fung Support Teams" to cheer for him at the event. Free tickets of the event turned into objects of speculation.

In the film he and Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin played a couple and even performed a funny kiss in front of Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Huang Yi, rivaling the popularity of the buck tooth Ka Fai. Director Wong Jing said, "Ting Fung and Ah Sa are old partners, privately they are very close and have a lot of chemistry. I want Ah Sa to play a girl who just started in love. Seeing the Ting Fung played young master she immediately fell in love at first sight. Ah Sa's performance was very natural."

Wong Jing also praised Cheung Ka Fai's professionalism for appearing in the buck tooth ugly look.

Media Asia boss Peter Lam Kin Ngok yesterday attended an event. Rumors surfaced about Pak Chi asking for 50 million for a three year contract to join his company. Mr. Lam said, "Pak Chi indeed has been to the company to negotiate a contract because the company wants to ask her to make a movie." Would he considered signing Pak Chi? Mr. Lam humorously said, "Until this minute we still haven't talked about it, everyone know she has a lot of potential and they don't have to worry about her. Actually I want to sing her sons the most, so many people outsides want her sons. However they are too little, I think so far they may not be signed." As for recent contact with the "missing" Pak Chi, Mr. Lam said, "Everyone is looking for her. Hong Kong is very small, she will come out sooner or later."

Donnie Yen's encounter with gays in Italy

It’s not just girls who find Donnie Yen attractive.

The Hong Kong superstar had a close encounter with gays at a party held by Dolce & Gabbana in Milan, Italy recently.

Two hunky models approached the action megastar at the event and their hands started wandering as they talked. Yen, unaware of their intention, continued to exchange pleasantries with the guys, until they were pulled away by an event personnel who later told Yen that his new friends were actually gays.

“They are very friendly,” he said with a laugh, adding that his wife Cissy Wang was one step ahead of him in realizing what the models were up to.

“I don’t mind befriending gays. I would be glad to have gay fans. It’s such a huge market. It’s a good thing to have people appreciating me,” he said.

Fat Gor pointed out that Wa Jai was young and handsome, only that he was too thin. Did Fat Gor regret not having any scene with Liu Ye? Fat Gor said no because they have worked with each other before.

Lately artists were often caught with hidden camera shots. Fat Gor said, "It truly is a little excessive, can they take it but not publish it! (Were you afraid of being caught?) Yes, (Did you close your curtains?) If I would be caught it would be very horrifying because I am gross, but I would have clothes on. (Not in the bathroom?) My bathroom is very hidden and uses frosted glass. In addition I wouldn't go to the balcony." Speaking of Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi, Fat Gor said, "No problem anymore! (But Pak Chi brought her sons to Canada?) So severe, is she applying for a school for them! (Rumor is she is keeping the children as her wager?) Wow, no way, they are the stars of the future, why would she keep them hidden."

Hung Yi yesterday dressed provocatively, "You just don't see me like this too foten. (Do you dress like this normally?) No, I am usually very casual, tonight is out of respect for the event. (Did you go downstairs for Bosco Wong Chung Chak to take a look?) No, today I was in a hurry. (Then you don't need to ask him?) Nothing like that." In the film Hung Yi played one of Yuan Shikai's wives, but she only appeared for a second and had no line. She thought this was a good experience though. Hung Yi felt very special to be able to work with international superstar Fat Gor. Fat Gor also had a connection with TVB and once asked the director not to cut Hung Yi's scene. Hung Yi said, "Actually I just know my role was very small, it's fine (even if it was cut), but Fat Gor truly is very nice!"

Huang Xiaoming recently won a Chinese Media award, his girlfriend Angelababy naturally congratulated him and said that she would be happy for any friend who won an award. Speaking of Huang Xiaoming silently admitting that she was his girlfriend, she asked "Really?" Why was she unwilling to admit the relationship? She hoped everyone's focus would be on her work and not be asked about her love life every time. Reporters asked her to be generous once, she only said, "Let's talk about work! (Aren't you afraid of being accused of lying?) I am not lying, I am just not answering. (Then are you admitting with silence?) No comment."

Cheung Ka Fai slimmed down a lot as well. Two nights ago he went to have seafood with Liu Ye and others. He said that he was just welcoming guests. Because seafood was not greasy, he feasted. He also revealed that a Mainland film company asked him to play a historical figure, but because he did not know much about the character he turned it down. He hoped to learn more before playing and believed that he will keep having chances in the future.

Nicholas Tse returns to work in Malaysia

Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi's marital troubles remained sealed. After a few days off, Ting Fung who spent a lonely Father's Day alone in his hotel room yesterday returned to work on THE VIRAL FACTOR (YIK JIN). Early in the morning he went to Dang Wangi's abandoned building for the shoot. Because the location was walled, reporters could not look inside. Around 7:30 PM, Ting Fung after 12 hours straight at work left the location.

With two victories at the Taiwan Golden Melodies award, Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) yesterday continued to shoot the film in Malaysia. He said that he did not have time to treat the team to dinner, but brought a lot of Taiwan snacks for everyone. Did he receive his co-star Ting Fung's congratulation? Before Chairman Chou opened his mouth, the crew already asked reporters not to ask.

Myolie makes a 1 second camero in the film as Chow Yun Fat's 7th mistress. She was much luckier than Tang Wei, who had her scenes completely cut out. It turns out Myolie had Chow Yun Fat's protection that saved her the 1 second screen time.

Fat Gor became the main focus when he appeared at the event, Liu Ye said that with Fat Gor around, it is a stress reliever? Fat Gor said: "Liu Ye is the lead actor, I am just a supporting actor!" Fat Gor plays Yuan Shikai, Liu Ye wanted to exchange roles with him, but Fat Gor was not willing to because he expressed he can't play Mao Zedong. Andy Lau plays Cai E and has scenes with Fat Gor, it has been many years since they last collaborated. He praises that Andy is very handsome and looks younger than before, but he's too thin.

Secret 'nude photos' by paparazzi is very terrifying

When asked about his opinion on the recent 'nude photo' incident taken by the media? Fat Gor said it's too over, and laughed that the media can take the photos, but don't publish them. He's also worried that if he got secretly photographed, that would be very terrifying for him, but at his house when he changes, he has frosted glass in the bathroom and he won't go out in the balcony.

Sexy outfits, not necessary for Bosco Wong to look over

Last night, Myolie was dressed in a sexy outfit and stole the limelight. She laughed and said that she rarely has a chance to dress up, so this time she deliberately dressed up for this occassion. Usually at home, she just dresses very causally. Asked if she need to first have Bosco Wong look over her outfit? She said not necessary. In the film, Myolie plays the 7th mistress of Yuan Shikai, who has a 1 second camero appearance, and it was fortunate that she did not get cut. Myolie said she was at the same scene as Fat Gor, but no scenes opposite of him. He is an international actor, while she turned into an Extra ('ke lei fe'), it is a special experience. Fat Gor takes good care of TVB artists, and treats her very well. During the shoot, he especially told the director not to cut her scene out! It was said she was more awesome than Tang Wei because her scenes were cut out completely.

Artists, please close your curtains!

Everytime there is a situation where an artist is secretly photographed at home, someone always asks: why didn’t the artist bother closing the curtains? Artists may have 100 valid “reasons” for why they don’t or shouldn’t need to close the curtains in their homes, but unfortunately, the HK paparazzi don’t listen to “reason.” Even if artists want to explain their “reasons”, it’s useless because the artists won’t get the chance to face these paparazzi anyway. In response to reports with secretly taken photographs, it doesn’t matter what the involved artists say, as what’s done is already done – determining right or wrong in the situation just becomes an issue of accountability. Whether the manner in which the photograph was taken is truly “illegal” or not, the only way to find out is for the artist to seriously pursue legal action and obtain confirmation in court. Don’t think that the paparazzi have not already thought about these ‘matters’ – the Media companies that they belong to most of the time have already weighed the legal ramifications prior to publishing the photos and clearly understand the type of legal responsibility they may have to take. This is a ‘normal’ process for the Media.

Artists’ homes have always been a ‘secret photograph hotspot’ for paparazzi – even though today’s paparazzi may not be as ‘crazy’ as they were years ago due to fewer resources available to ‘follow’ an artist all day every day, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen. Artists should not let their guard down just because they live in a highly elevated place and there are no buildings or any other piece of architecture nearby that is even remotely at the same level, or there is tight security on the premises. Artists who think that they are ‘protected’ in this type of environment are truly underestimating how far we have advanced in terms of technology, especially in the area of photography. Nowadays, someone standing in Kowloon can point a good camera with a long lens toward Hong Kong island and can clearly (and secretly) ‘photograph’ the object of their desire on that island – and this isn’t even the ‘newest’ technology! Using Google Maps, there is also the ability to photograph via satellite exactly what is happening on any given street. This proves that being a far distance away or not having any buildings near where one lives does not take away the possibility of being secretly photographed. Even if long distance cameras aren’t used, there are definitely other options out there, such as remote control technology (the type used to remotely control toy model airplanes and cars), that can be used to secretly photograph someone – for example, a common device such as an iphone is more than sufficient to remotely control a flying camera. Even simpler than this – someone could ‘hide out’ in units above / below or to the left/right of the targeted residence and figure out a way to take secret photographs. So to protect themselves, why don’t artists just close their curtains? One might argue that an artist should be able to open their curtains or even their windows for that matter, even if it’s only to admire the scenery outside. Sure, of course they should be able to do so – they just need to make sure they are fully-clothed, ‘made-up’ as though they are ready to go outside, and not doing anything ‘unusual’ – as long as the ‘scene’ is not ‘newsworthy’, then that’s fine. [TN: the writer of the article is being sarcastic here]

To decrease the chance of being secretly photographed, it is necessary to think the way the paparazzi thinks. First off, don’t underestimate one’s own ‘newsworthiness’ – whether popular or not, an artist needs to understand that at any given time, he/she could become the ‘target’ for such photographs and thus prepare themselves mentally. Also, understand that reports incorporating secret photographs don’t always have to be front cover / headline news – they could simply be one of the ‘articles’ or ‘stories’ contained within the magazine. Depending on how ‘daring’ the photographs are, a magazine could still decide to publish photos of an unknown or unpopular artist as a front cover story. In addition, just because a particular magazine already published secret photos of a particular artist one week doesn’t mean that they won’t do it again for a second week in a row (or longer for that matter). In fact, there are some paparazzi out there who secretly take photographs and hold off on publishing them because the artist (or situation) may not be newsworthy at that particular time, however later on, when there is no other ‘exciting’ news to report, they could dig up the photographs and publish them at that time to generate ‘news’.

Artists need to constantly remain alert – don’t think that secretly photographing someone is a ‘fad’ that will eventually go away with time. It’s necessary to take precautions both at home, but also abroad as well, even when travelling. Paparazzi know full well that there are many artists out there who let their guards down the minute they leave HK, innocently thinking that as long as they are not in HK, they won’t become targets. Paparazzi are notorious for choosing moments when an artist is most vulnerable to secretly photograph him/her – so the best preventive measure is to lessen the opportunity for the paparazzi to do so whenever possible. Everyone knows that it is virtually impossible to completely prevent a ‘secret photograph’ situation from occurring – federal legislation to address the issue is not going to happen anytime soon. And even though pursuing legal action is an option, there is no guarantee of the results, plus the amount of time, money, and energy spent could be extensive – in the end, the only thing the artist may get out of it (those who are lucky) is a sense of ‘justice’.

If the simple action of closing the curtains can greatly reduce the probability of all these ‘headaches’ occurring, why not take that action? Of course all artists have the right to their own space and privacy, and secretly photographing someone is absolutely wrong – when a situation occurs, the public is usually on the artist’s side and everyone heavily condemns the Media, but yet, the ‘secret photograph’ situations continue to occur. Why not just close the curtains so as not to give the paparazzi any opportunity whatsoever? It’s similar to female artists who constantly cover themselves up or wear layers of clothing to prevent the chance of accidental exposure. Basically, at times when you actually WANT the paparazzi to secretly take photos, THEN open the curtains!
