Gregory Lee's new lover Miki: "Waiting For You!"; Shirley Yeung's baby photos exposed

Following Shirley Yeung's announcement that she had a baby girl, [Oriental Daily] exposes that ex-boyfriend Gregory Lee has found himself a new Chinese-Korean girlfriend, named Miki and is 25 years old this year. She has a cute outer appearance and even looks similar to the 'House Boy's Goddess' Rose Chan. She is a part-time model and enjoys cooking. Gregory met her when he was teaching drifting, which is also a hobby of Miki's. This relationship is less stressful compared to previously when he dated Shirley, the public always compared their income and achievements, plus their personality and styles formed the 'woman superior than man' relationship. However, he has now found a girlfriend that is gentle and obedient.

In regards to dating Miki, Gregory generously said: "I did meet a Chinese-Korean girl, we were introduced earlier this year through a friend. (Have you two passed the first stage yet?) We have just known each other for a few months, haven't gotten that deep yet. Still getting to know each other. (Met the parents yet?) No, she knows how to read Chinese newspapers, I'm afraid if I say something wrong, I'll scare her. (How did you two spark?) We get along and its fate." Gregory frankly said his new girlfriend does know about his past relationship with Shirley: "She read the papers, and knows that I've gone through a lot of pressure. She's really empathetic, but I want to reiterate, I am a man, I don't want the public to think that I'm so miserable!"

Since he started keeping in touch with Miki, Gregory does not try to hide anything and often sends love through the internet. Yesterday Miki complains to Gregory, shouting: "Gregory Lee, waiting for you!" Turns out she was just asking her boyfriend to buy her a Hello Kitty product. Gregory replied 10 minutes later and said he'll definitely buy it.

Regarding Shirley's news that she had a baby yesterday, Miki sends her encouragement for Gregory online: "Everybody has their own experiences! Can't sleep at night and will have a lot, a lot of images running through your mind. The previous you, the previous me, the previous us."

Gregory also praises his new girlfriend for helping him get back on his feet: "I have really been happier lately. It is because this girl always chats and communicates with me, she helped me."

Andy publish a book on his experience of shooting A Simple Life

During the shooting of A Simple Life, Andy Lau wrote a diary and it become a new book titled My 30 Working Days. On 5 March 2012, he was interviewed and he expressed that normally he has an habit to record down his feelings and emotions. Earlier, he also invited 60 writers born after 80s to write a book about him, however it failed to nurture.

The book – My 30 Working Days: A Simple Life Shooting Diary is currently the only book self written by Andy, it includes 30 personal diary entries, the feelings of the films production team and lots of photos from the film.

Andy said that these 30 diary entries were initially to be shared with Andy World Club family members on his personal blog, but it became a book in the end which is not he had intended, “It’s just like Tao Jie, as you desire but adore by all.” Andy specially stress that he did not write this book specially for the film. “What I wrote is no different to all who write blogs, I never thought of publishing it, or as a promotion for this film. Actually it’s very simple, I just wanted to record down what I encountered in the 30 days of shooting this film, which includes feelings for the film, and the influence of this film to my feelings and emotion.”

Talking about writing, Andy exclaimed that he had a habit of writing diary. He said: “When young, I will record with a sound recorder, when there’s Internet, I rather like to write a short entry. However in my annual fan gathering, I will write a long entry, just like a letter, writing down my feelings for them of that year, how I wish them to be, I love the feeling of writing letters.” Andy said that he thought of writing a novel, but he wrote more musical scripts, he said: “During the 5-6 years in acting classes, I wrote a lot of musical scripts.”

Everybody will be wondering why Andy has so much time, arranged time properly in between singing, acting and investing in films. Andy said that he would like to write book about time management, telling everybody how to distribute time well. He said: “I find it strange that a lot of people find time is not enough, whereas I feel there a lot of time. Take for example normally I need to sing, listen to many songs and shoot many films, I had watch all the TV dramas when you name them, so if you can manage your time well, you can do a lot of things.”

Andy revealed that not long ago he invited 60 writers born after 80s to have a chat with him and publish a book. “I feel that it will be a special book, 60 writers to write their feelings after chatting with Andy Lau. I say the same words, 50-60 people will have different understanding, if they can write it out, it will be a specially good book.”

Andy said: “I told them those words that I don’t dare say to the media, I even lose my temper, slammed the door and left for 30 minutes. I wanted to know what they were thinking in those 30 minutes, what they would be scolding me, but it’s still good words from them.”

For this creative book, it was “destroyed” by Andy in the end, the reason being these writers wrote him till to perfect which is no different to media reports, “I wish to know the different outlook of me from everybody.”

Elanne Kong wants to marry a to style man

Last night, Chapmant TO Man Jat and Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam personally promoted their film LOVE LIFTING (GO GUI OI) in Shenzhen. Director Herman Yau Lai To this time switched To Man Jat and Kong Yeuk Lam's gender roles, so To Man Jat became an "all purpose husband" who has fallen for love and family. Director Yau said that that he attempted this type of romantic film for the first time in hopes of calling out the "house husband" instinct that was hidden within men. This film also was a true story that deeply touched Director Yau. Meanwhile, a chubby Hong Kong fan came from Hong Kong and hoped to take the chance with the help of two stars to express his love to the girl he liked. Regrettably the girl turned him down.

To Man Jat admitted that he like in the film was a "house husband" at home so he performed true to his nature. He said, "Because of my family, since fifth grade I began to cook. Now I can cook very well. As for cuisine, my wife and I are both vegetarians. However I truly can't forget a Yunnan restaurant in Xiangmihu, its food's too delicious." To Man Jat joked, "I am not good looking, but I treat my family very well. I take care of all the chores. With the old lady's steady income if we save here and there it's enough." Kong Yeuk Lam bashfully said that she too hoped to be able to run into a good men like To, who would treat her and her family well. Ordinary love was what she longed for the most.

For the later weight loss, Kong Yeuk Lam said it was very easy. She revealed to the ladies that actually maintaining weight was controlling food combinations, reducing greasy food and not eating after 6PM.

To Man Jat even said that he was someone without a dream and needed to follow the dreamer (the director). Under his old lady's "super economical person" management he had much less pressure. He said, now he only wants to be a good actor and has an open mind. However he would not bring any emotional color to complete the character's image in the script. As a producer, he said, "If I can help someone else, fulfill someone else's dream, I would."

Shu Qi, Shawn Yue almost collapse during a film shoot

The thriller romance THE SECOND WOMAN (CHING MAI) two days ago opened officially on March 8 Women's Day. Director Carol Lai Miu Shuet and actors Shu Qi, Shawn Yue Man Lok and Chen Shu attended the Shanghai press conference. The event even arranged for a cake to celebrate Chen Shu's birthday. In the film aside from the relationships between the Shu Qi played twin sisters and Yue Man Lok, the most attractive was the director's special addition of the "act within an act" element that was on display as a play. To Chen Shu who had dance and stage performance experience it was very easy, but to Yue Man Lok and Shu Qi the stress was enormous. Yue Man Lok even joked that he was reluctant to recall the scene.

However their performance received the director's compliment. Yue Man Lok joked, "Under pressure I had to release it, otherwise I would truly collapse. So Shu Qi and I were very noisy on the set and fought everyday like crazy people." Shu Qi also said that the stage performance was the hardest, luckily they had Professor Chen Shu to teach them a few tricks. Shu Qi said, "Working with professor Chen Shu was very comfortable, I really learned a lot." The ladies in the film did not "fight" for Yuem Na Lok for the beginning to the end. Shu Qi sometimes would ask Chen Shu for help. Chen Shu hoped that after Shu Qi's fans watched the film they would not hate her, because she actually is a good person.

As for Wa Jai, he said that since he was not a woman he did not need to celebrate. What about his wife? He said that she did not either. His pregnant wife has been caught on camera frequently. She also had two bodyguards with her. Wa Jai only said, "Thank you everything, our lives are great. (Are you angry?) No problem. (Will the bodyguards protect you?) Our lives are great. thank you thank you." Speaking of his wife switching doctors, Wa Jai immediately said that he did not want to discuss this subject.

Since the film has officially been released, would he arrange for his wife to watch it? Wa Jai did not know how to answer and later joked that he has not thought so in depth. Would his wife support him? He awkwardly laughed and nodded. Should his wife watch comedy to remain cheerful? Wa Jai said, "You guys are great. (Are you afraid that it's too touching?) That isn't convenient yet!"

At this time Sister Deanie changed the subject to save Wa Jai and said that yesterday she and Wa Jai promoted separately. Wa Jai went to Taiwan while she went to Malaysia. As for their future jobs, Sister Deanie said that she was waiting for Wong Jing. Wa Jai joked, "She has to work on SWEET SISTER PEACH MATURES 33D, I read it in the newspaper!" After laughing together, Sister Deanie said that she had to read the script first before considering. However she still has not received Wong Jing's call. How sexy will she be? Wa Jai joked that if it was artistic she could consider it. Sister Deanie mischievously said, "I feel I am very sexy! (Do you have 33D?) I don't know, maybe even more!"

[NEWS] Big Bang in Singapore's Magazine (8 Days)

Big Bang's Big Year

Comeback kids, Big Bang, are back with a new disc, Alive.
Here's why it's a career milestone for the Korean hip-hop maestros.

1. THEY'RE BOUNCING BACK FROM ADVERSITY
2011 was a rough year for Big Bang - Daesung was charged and later acquitted of running down a motorcyclist in a hit-and-run; G-Dragon was caught smoking pot. Instead of being damned to obscurity, both earned sympathy points for braving through the scandals. They returned to the studios like industrious idols and churned out the aptly-titled Alive.

2. THIS IS THEIR FIRST ALBUM AS A FULL GROUP OF GIVE IN TWO YEARS
Okay, so singing about being bad boys in 'Bad Boys' on your redemptive return doesn't exactly sound like a good idea. But scratch beneath the surface of the R&B-driven Alive and you'll hear that the boys are a little more sombre and grown up.

3. THE WORLD IS WATCHING
They're embarking on their very first world tour - yes, their solo concert will travel out of Seoul for the first time in their seven-year career. There are whispers that they might make a pit-stop here, so fans should keep their fingers crossed.

[NEWS] Billboard K-Pop 100: Bigbang & Miss A Unseat Lyn

As predicted last week, BIGBANG and miss A were the two acts to watch as both their new singles made big strides up the K-Pop Hot 100 at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, pushing four-week chart topper Lyn and her soundtrack single, "To Turn Back Hands of Time," to No. 3.

The eclectic boy group BIGBANG (who beat Britney Spears for the MTV European Music Award for "Worldwide Act" last year ) released their long anticipated 5th mini-album, "Alive," recently with the first track from the project, "Blue," immediately jumping to the top spot on the chart, beating Lyn's quest to stay atop for her fifth week and tie IU's chart record set in January. After staying away from the spotlight for a year, and going through some controversies with the law, the group has returned stronger and more mature. "Blue" is a collaborative effort of YG Entertainment producer Teddy and the group's flamboyant leader G-dragon. The electronic ballad's (which sees a departure from their usual poppy club bangers) NYC-based music video has garnered over 11 million views since its release on February 21st. With six unique title tracks that they will be promoting from the mini-album, one can expect to see more of their singles to chart in weeks to come.

Recently Steven Ma has been focused on shooting series in Mainland. ND Daily Special Feature: Analysis of the 2012 HK Television War PART 2: An in-depth look at each company’s strategies and tactics: CITY TELECOM (CTI)

Translator’s Note: The below is the second of a multi part “special feature” article about the 2012 HK Television Wars that was published in ND Daily News last week . The remaining parts will be translated and posted in the coming weeks.

With this being a ‘war’, of course it’s standard to bring out the ‘weapons’ and battle it out to see who wins. However, since the 3 new free-to-air licenses have not been issued yet, it makes sense for the parties involved to keep their most ‘damaging’ weapons concealed, revealing just enough to gain the momentum they need – prior to the start of the ‘official’ war, they must first fight the smaller verbal and psychological battles in their efforts to establish their positions.

The three new ‘powers’ that will be entering the battle field – City Telecom, NowTV, and i-Cable – can be considered the ‘offensive’ in the impending war. In looking at the 3 companies, NowTV and i-Cable have the best advantage from a technology standpoint, however the company that has been making the most ‘noise’ at this juncture is definitely City Telecom, led by its chairman Ricky Wong -- this ‘General’ (Ricky Wong) has already been eagerly ‘marketing’ his aspirations to the world in the hopes of using the momentum to strengthen his camp. With this ‘war’ just getting started, which of the companies will truly have the strength and tenacity to remain until the end? In planning their offense, what ‘weapons’ will each of these company’s leaders utilize?

The 2 parties on the “defensive” in the impending war are of course the ‘lone powerhouse’ TVB and the ‘perpetually weak’ ATV. In the past few years, TVB has certainly encountered some challenges when it comes to defending its ‘powerhouse’ status: the aggressive poaching of its staff as well as the seemingly endless complaints about its unfair policies and politics have certainly had a significant impact on the station’s reputation. Given the circumstances, what steps are TVB taking to combat this crisis? And what about ATV? They may be backed into a corner right now, but with the other parties already taking action, they can’t continue to just sit back and observe – it’s time for them to fight back!

With the TV ‘war’ set to break out in the coming weeks, ND Daily’s reporter paid visits to each of the leaders and exclusively interviewed them about their plans for the upcoming battle, their ‘secret’ weapons, as well as their assessment of their opponents in the hopes of gaining some perspective on the anticipated battle. As for who will end up actually winning this war, audiences will have to wait and see….

.---.

City Telecom (CTI)

Chief Leader: Ricky Wong

Leader’s Background: City Telecom Limited’s founder and chairman; in the telecommunications business, he is known for being creative and not necessarily ‘playing by the rules’; when it comes to tactics, he’s good at ‘sidelining the ball’ and is an expert at battling adversity; nicknamed ‘telecom prodigy’.

Overall Strategy: Poach talent with the lure of big money; focus on creating high quality, ‘golden timeslot’ series.

Advantages: Massive wealth and bold language; rely on sincerity and high salaries to recruit personnel; artists have unrestricted freedom and are respected. Good at utilizing the Media to fight ‘verbal’ and ‘psychological’ battles; takes a high profile, ostentatious approach

Disadvantages: Most of the artists he ‘poached’ are not first-line siu sangs or fadans, so whether he will be successful in attracting audiences will depend on the overall final product. Also, his studio has not been built yet, so for the time being, filming locations will need to be rented.

Strategy 1: Poaching talent with the lure of high salaries: “Most important in the future development of television is people”

In today’s HK television industry, there isn’t a single person who does not know of Ricky Wong. He is a vigorously ambitious man who is intent on changing the landscape of the HK television industry and ‘rewriting’ all the current rules of the game. In September of last year (2011), Ricky Wong started his ‘poaching’ strategy by luring away dozens of TVB scriptwriters, copy editors, directors, and assistant directors with the promise of doubling their salaries; at the same time, he personally met with many of TVB’s siu sangs (male leads), fadans (female leads), green leaf (supporting) and ‘gam cho’ (elder) artists – in addition, he sent out mass text messages recruiting artists to join his company. Even though majority of the artists he was able to successfully ‘poach’ are green leaf or second/third line artists, his ‘mantra’ of allowing “unrestricted freedom” and the “freedom to appear on any TV station at any time” helped him to successfully attract popular middle-aged siu sangs and fadans – such as Felix Wong, Maggie Cheung, etc. – who did not want to be tied down to one TV station.

With every move designed to counter TVB, Ricky Wong held the groundbreaking ceremony for his new Television and Multi-media Center in Tseung Kwan O back on 2/24 and invited all of the former TVB artists who signed with him – such as Felix Wong, Maggie Cheung, Frankie Lam, Bernice Liu, etc. – to attend. By building his studios near TVB as well as ‘showing off’ the artists he was able to successfully sign, it seems like he is once again ‘flaunting’ his power in TVB’s face.

On the day of the groundbreaking ceremony, ND Daily’s reporter got the chance to personally interview this ‘telecom prodigy’ and to better understand his strategy in the face of the war.

During the interview, Mr. Wong indicated that he is already seeing initial results from his ‘poaching’ strategy: “As of right now, we have already successfully signed 140 artists, with many them being first line as well as ‘talent path’ artists – by the end of the year, we are anticipating a total of 250 artists signed to our company. In addition, we have already put together a group of behind-the-scenes production and creative staff, consisting of approximately 180 people – many of them have already started work. By the end of March / beginning of April, CTI will start filming our very first television series.”

Indeed, the poaching strategy has been Ricky Wong’s most ‘damaging’ strategy against TVB to date, as it created a ‘hole’ in TVB’s creative team [aka scriptwriters], causing artists such as Wong Cho Lam, Damien Lau, etc. to have to step in and do screenwriting work, which ended up being a huge blow to the dignity of the remaining screenwriters at TVB. Even golden producer Lee Tim Sing has lamented about not being able to secure a female lead for his last series before retirement [the series “Detective Columbo”] and having to take care of all matters – big and small – all by himself due to the lack of personnel.

Discussing his philosophy when it comes to working with his people, Ricky Wong’s response seems to indirectly imply that TVB does not respect talent: “Actually, when it comes to development and growth of the television industry, the most important component is the ‘software’ – in this case, the ‘software’ is the ‘people’. Therefore, learning how to respect people is of the utmost importance.” Indeed, TVB does have a reputation of not valuing talents, especially the ‘non-biological’ ones – also, the numerous complaints and discontent with the low pay and long working hours were all reported on widely by the Media last year. So with this strategy, Ricky Wong took advantage of the timing [when discontent with TVB was at its peak], honed in on their weaknesses, and is now reaping the benefits.

Strategy 2: Reveal TVB’s weaknesses; speaks ‘boldly’: “We will be producing 3D TV programs in the future”

At the groundbreaking ceremony, at the subsequent university recruitment seminars, and each time he talks about his ‘TV dream’ with reporters, not only does Ricky Wong utilize astounding numbers to describe his operations, he also takes every chance he gets to ‘indirectly’ point out that TVB is too old-fashioned, its policies are old, and its material is outdated.

On the day of the groundbreaking ceremony, ND Daily’s reporter asked Mr. Wong what type of ‘rules’ he wanted to establish, to which he replied: “Establish rules that are fair and give artists the opportunity to develop rather than be tied down to one TV station.”

Asked about what type of themes he wants to explore in his series, Mr. Wong replied: “We don’t want to keep doing the same old ‘family fighting over inheritance’ or traditional love story themes and we definitely don’t want to keep going back and forth between the same 2 to 3 story concepts. We hope to have more diversity and have a lot of different themes.”

When asked about how he would provide audiences with ‘high quality’ programs, Mr. Wong replied: “Others use plastic in place of glass and use fake posters to represent an outside location – we will use real scenery and real locations!” He also expressed that within the next 3 years, his company will be producing a TV program completely in 3D. In addition, he will be investing $600 to $800 million HKD to build a production center that is as big as 33 football stadiums, with aspirations of it being the largest filming studio in all of Asia. He also has plans to produce the first television musical in Hong Kong’s history.

Ricky Wong’s plans are definitely targeted at TVB’s weak spots – actually, TVB had once included the creation of a 3D television program in its plans, however due to limitations with their transmissions and technology, the plans fell through.

Indeed, it seems that even the artists and behind-the-scenes personnel who have joined Ricky Wong’s company have been indirectly pointing out the ‘limitations’ to TVB’s productions and the hindrance it poses to creativity – with Felix Wong stating that there’s “more opportunity to develop here [CTI]” and Maggie Cheung stating that the “new environment gives a lot of freedom”. With Ricky Wong adding his comments on top of that, the ‘criticism’ of TVB automatically becomes ‘headline news’ in the entertainment papers the next day!

With concrete productions actually being worked on right now by both sides, there’s no telling at this moment who will win the battle. For competitive leaders such as Ricky Wong who are eager to come out the winner, employing psychological warfare right now is not necessarily the wrong thing, as long as it suits him.

Future Prospects: Start filming in April, production process completely transparent

Compared to TVB’s usual policy of keeping its production process largely closed off to the public, Ricky Wong’s production ideas are more ‘daring’: “Our television production center will include a long glass corridor where ordinary citizens and students can come observe the production process, including filming series and shows, doing voice-over work, makeup, props, sets, etc. – this way, they can truly understand what goes into producing a series and the joy that it brings. This will help bring us closer to the audiences.”

In April, Ricky Wong’s first series will start filming. Since their filming studio has not been built yet, CTI has already rented 2 studios for filming internal shots – the rest of the filming will be done on location.

Ricky Wong also revealed some additional plans for the future: “We will start off by filming 2 to 3 series at the same time – we’re estimating that we’ll produce about a dozen series totaling 260 hours and also 104 hours of variety show programming by the end of this year. In 2013, the plan is to increase production to 650 hours of drama series and 520 hours of variety show programming.”

Andy: I will depend on women throughout my life

5 March 2012, the film A Simple Life press conference cum premiere was held in Beijing, Andy Lau revealed that his mother once draw a stick from the temple for him and it’s said that he would depended on women all his life, from the current look, it seems that way.

In 1982, Ann Hui cast Andy in her film – Boat People upon seeing the potential in him, that film allowed the audience to familiarize him who had just entered showbiz. Many years later, he collaborated with her again in A Simple Life which allowed him to win the Golden Horse Film Awards Best Actor award again. When talked about Ann, Andy quipped she has a transformation process of “seeing mountain is mountain, seeing mountain is not mountain, seeing mountain is mountain again”, in the past Ann was open in her films as she could listen to all opinions, but then she refused to listen to anybody. During the shooting of A Simple Life, she changed back to when she’s shooting her first film, she listen to everything. Andy said that actually his performance is also like that, at the beginning listen to everybody’s opinion, to “why you want to comment about me” to “anything you want”.

A mischievous Andy quipped that he has affinity with women, his first TV drama Till We Meet Again was a female director, his mother then went to the temple to draw stick: “The stick said that I would depend on women all my life, indeed, most of the chances given to me were by women.” Andy said.

Deanie Ip talked about her private life: she woke up at 4am, go out for a walk, eat breakfast, do some house cores, followed by lunch, continues with house cores, sleep early at night. She also does not think that winning the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival would help her win some film offers, she quipped: “I’m not Andy, I’m not a box office person.” In addition, Deanie does not have any feelings to awards, the award she won at Venice was placed at her home to hang hats, to her it’s making it to good use.

Deanie does not have any thinking when accepting film offers, however it’s her “god-son” Andy managed to find a good script. On the way, Andy said that he was thinking that actually they could shoot a comedy film about Mona Fong, making use of her to bring out the stories of Hong Kong. “It will be like Forrest Gump!” Andy said excitedly. Looking at Deanie, Andy said that he think she could fit the role.
Wang Fuli was Andy’s mother in the film, she said that the first time that she saw Andy was on the crew bus, Andy’s first words to her was addressing her mother, this word immediately dissolve the pressure she had for the film. Andy then replied that this word was rather powerful as Wong replied that he did quite well in Battle of Wits, but found a wrong person to dub, thus missed the nomination.

In A Simple Life, Andy’s character does not care much about dressing as he was mistaken as an air-con repairman. With regards to this, Andy said that he indeed encounter such things in life. When shooting Boat People, he just got graduated from the actor training classes, the teacher told them, what you can help the crew please offer help, thus when Andy spotted a reflective board left untouched, he took the initiative to move it, however the crew member scolded him: “Please don’t touch our things! Who are you? Go out!”

When interviewed, Andy said that when he decided to invest in A Simple Life, he has full confidence and trust in Ann Hui, with the current good feedback of the film, he feel that it should be that way, however he does not wish to make any prediction on the box office taking. With the recognition of some many awards won by the film, Andy feel that it comes from director Ann Hui’s hardwork and luck.

Most of the films that Andy invested were artistic films, he stress that art films does not need huge investment and less pressurize. When being referred as “art youth”, he revealed modern dance is another art that he loves. He revealed that he wanted to perform modern dance during this year’s Hong Kong Art Festival, but he gave up after practicing for two weeks and his standard is too far off. He feel that if he can’t reach his own standard, it’s better not to perform for others to see.

In the film, Andy did not accompany Tao Jie till her last days. With regards to this, Andy said that actually this is life. Many crew members around him, at the time when their family members passed away, they were accompanying him for meals. It’s also the same for Andy. When Anita Mui passed away, he was in America. When Anita still could talk, he telephoned her telling her that he will be back the next day. When Andy made his trip back, Anita could not talk anymore. Andy said that this is reality.

When talked about performance, Andy said that he had watch Qin Hailu’s performance in the musical Four Generations, he feel that she did extremely well on the stage, if have the chance, he also wanted to try out musical. In addition, he hope he could act in a film similar to Descendants.

Chen Tianxing relys on Nunchucks for a comeback

The kung fu kid Chen Tianxing directed and starred first real kung fu film from China, NUN CHUCKS, has already opened earlier this month nationwide. Earlier Chen Tianxing led NUN CHUCKS stars Yu Yangfei, Huang Xiheng and Miu Shixuan to Changsha to promote the film. Chen Tianxing said that although the film did not have any big stars, it was a real kung fu film without any special effect, wire or stunt double.

NUN CHUCKS is about a filmmaker who is obsessed with Bruce Lee's kung fu. In order to make a Bruce Lee movie he neglects his family. Finally his wife leaves him and his son is kidnapped. In the process of saving his son he understands what is the real nun chucks spirit. Chen Tianxing said that most of the film was based on life experience. He studied martial art for 26 years and Bruce Lee was his idol. He also made 8 kung fu films before but none had theatrical release. During his filmmaking process he lost everything, finally his former girlfriend chose to leave him and left him very sentimental.

Chen Tianxing said that this production was absolutely "for real". Martial art actors were asked to fight while protecting their own safety, which was a huge bright spot for the film's action scenes. All the fight scenes in the bamboo forest, the swamp, the cliff, hillside had no special effect at all. Because of this film's display of exciting real kung fu action and Chinese value, it won the 5th Cologne International Film Festival's highest honor and overseas kung fu fan support. Today kung fu fans and Bruce Lee fans from everywhere have already booked over 200 shows.

However I don’t think it’s a topic worth addressing. I don’t pay attention to it. There’s never even been a male that’s approached me believing I was gay. It’s not true.”

Not satisfied by this answer, Kyuhyun continued to prod Siwan, hoping to elicit a response. Kyuhyun asked, “Is anyone in ZE:A gay?” Siwan responded to this question by firing back one of his own, “Was there in Super Junior hyung(older brother)’s group?”

This question naturally surprised Kyuhyun, who was rendered speechless by the awesome comeback.

Julian Cheung walks in Mongkok casually

(Christine Kuo, Patrick Kong, Julian Cheung, Annie Liu)

Julian Cheung Chi Lam, Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau), Christine Kuo two nights ago worked on the Patrick Kong (Yip Lim Sum)'s film NATURAL BORN LOVERS (TIN SUN OI CHING KONG) in Mongkok. In the story Chilam wore a cute beer hat and went on a walk with Lau Sum Yau, but they ran into his old flame Christine Kuo. Although it was just a few minutes, due to all the noise and flash photography from the crowd the production was affected. To keep the cast from disturbance, the crew raised black cloth for cover but the people still knelt down to take photos.

Chilam often dined in Mongkok and would try to coordinate photo requests. He said, "An artist doesn't need to be too emotional, no artist is more famous than Chow Yun Fat and he too always takes the bus and the MTR!" Has he run into an ex like the story? Chilam said, "I haven't because most of my exes are my good friends and they aren't too many anyway. My wife (Anita) Yuen Wing Yi wouldn't be jealous. She has always encouraged me to make more friends."

Lau Sum Yau admitted that with Chilam and the crew's protection she was not worried about the chaos. "I have shopped here for undergarment, but I have to pick the right time to come." She and Chilam had kiss scenes but they happened in a very natural environment, so she would not be embarrassed.

The reporter observed that Andy was in control at the set as after shooting, he immediately walked to the control area to watch the playback and communicate with the crew member.

Andy is very strict with the shooting, he raised his hands with some movements to explain to the crew members as he wanted to to follow his instructions for the shooting. It seems that Andy is full of confidence and indeed had the look of a director.

According to report, this is the director’s first film, when compared to Andy who had more than 100 films to his name, it seems like him “trying to play sword in front of Kwan Gong.”

ND Daily Exclusive: Interview with Andy Lau – “Family allows me to maintain an ‘ordinary’ mindset”

In the film «A Simple Life», Andy Lau became a completely different person: throwing aside the ‘big star’ status, he dressed in ordinary clothes and carried a simple shoulder bag – at one point, people even mistook him for a plumber! It was this seemingly ‘ordinary’ and ‘simple’ performance that earned Andy a Best Actor award at the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards last year.

In the film, Andy Lau and actress Deanie Ip bring to life a master / servant relationship that is both simple yet at the same time heartwarming – when the aging Deanie falls ill, Andy remains by her side, accompanying her to the senior center, taking her for walks in the garden, taking her out to watch movies, etc. The director of the film, Ann Hui, has nothing but praise for Andy’s exemplary performance. For someone like Andy, who has always been a considerate and caring person, was it difficult to express the subtle emotions in the film?

Recently, ND Daily’s reporter had the chance to sit down with Andy Lau for an exclusive interview. In this interview, the reporter had the rare opportunity to hear Andy share personal stories about two important people in his life – his mother and father. As a well-known celebrity, Andy has a constantly busy work schedule, yet he is able to maintain such a meticulous, heartfelt relationship with his parents: whenever he sees that his mother’s clothes are not properly matched, he would quietly help her re-coordinate them; his parents don’t want to live with him because they are afraid that their friends who come to visit may not see him at his best, yet he insists that they remain by his side, as that’s the only way he will feel at ease….. by looking at Andy from his role as a ‘devoted son’, perhaps we will be able to better understand why the ‘Andy Lau’ in «A Simple Life»may not truly be ‘Andy Lau’.

ND = ND Daily Reporter
AL = Andy Lau

Part A

Taking his parents to his fan club gathering
To his surprise – they got up early just to prepare

In the film, Andy Lau and Deanie Ip have a somewhat ‘romantic’ scene: Andy [in the role of Roger] is planning to take Deanie [in the role of Tao Jeh] to a very important movie premiere. Therefore, Deanie – who lives in a senior center – specially goes to get her hair done, puts on a pretty outfit, then waits patiently for the suit-clad Andy to come pick her up. After watching the movie, the two of them walk off together, hand in hand – a ‘romantic’ moment, almost as though they were on a date….

ND: Your character Roger goes from not understanding how to express love in the beginning to later on being able to take meticulous care of Tao Jeh. Comparing the two emotions, was it more difficult to portray the feeling of ‘not understanding how to express’ your love and concern? Because in real life, you’re usually quite considerate of others.

AL: Actually, it wasn’t too bad – I just followed the script, as the script was written very meticulously. His (Roger’s) train of thought is actually quite simple – he is by himself with no other family and she [Tao Jeh] is the same. When she falls ill and has a stroke, if he has to go to work, how will she manage at home by herself? Does she want to go live in a senior center? Will he get yelled at for taking her there? Will people say that he is heartless and indifferent? Actually, these types of situations are very common in every day life. The English name for this movie is “A Simple Life” – the story is actually a very simple one and in there, you won’t find what you’d normally expect in a movie.

ND: Yes, very simple – and doesn’t stir up emotions…everything is very natural and automatic.

AL: Yes! You will notice that neither character ever cries in the movie.

ND: In fact, there are quite a few small details that actually evoke a smile or two. For instance, when you tell Tao Jeh that you’re taking her to a movie and she takes the utmost care in getting ready [getting her hair done, carefully choosing an outfit], just like a teenage girl going on a date.

AL: It’s just like my parents…the first time I invited my mom and dad to a fan club gathering, they actually got up very early in the morning to start washing their hair, preparing their clothes, etc. It’s true!

ND: Did you anticipate that type of reaction from them beforehand?

AL: No….they even bought new clothes for the occasion! I’m usually busy with work, so never knew that they did so much preparation ahead of time. I just saw it on that day…aiyo, I’d never seen my mom that pretty! (Did you tell her in person?) Yes, yes!

ND: Later on, did you think to yourself – ‘if I had known they’d be so happy, I should have taken them a long time ago’?

AL: That time they went was perfect timing because prior to that, it wasn’t really appropriate. In the past, our fan club gatherings were either at discos or some sort of sports arena. Later on, the fan club started to get bigger and that time I took them was for one of the more official large scale gatherings…it was in 1995 or around that time – we were at a location that could fit 5000 people. I didn’t purposefully plan on taking them – that’s just the way it happened.

ND: Seeing them happily preparing for the event, what were your feelings at that time?

AL: I would try to think about it from their perspective – they probably felt at that time that their son taking them to the event was an affirmation for them. It’s just like with Tao Jeh – the fact that Roger wanted to take her to an important movie premiere meant that she had a certain importance in his life; it’s a type of affirmation for her.

ND: Did you take your parents to go see «A Simple Life»?

AL: They haven’t seen it yet.

ND: Have they mentioned that they’d like to go watch it? With you winning Best Actor [at the Golden Horse Awards], they’re probably looking forward to it?

AL: They’ve actually never made any ‘requests’ when it comes to anything related to my job or career. This entire time, my mom and dad see me simply as their son, Andy – this is what moves me the most. They’ve never wanted to go watch a particular movie just because I’m in it and they’ve never requested to go watch my concerts – they’re the type who are purely ‘just parents’. They’ve never once felt that they should be extra proud to have a celebrity for a son. This is what has allowed me to maintain an ‘ordinary’ mindset when it comes to family. I feel that this type of family is extremely important for me, as its simplicity and honesty are forever guaranteed.

Part B

His parents didn’t want to live with him
But he insists: “I need to see them beside me every day in order for me to feel at ease”

It can be said that Andy Lau is one of the celebrities in the entertainment industry who is the most protective of his family. Not only does Andy barely talk about his wife Carol Chu in front of the Media, he also seldom mentions his parents either. However, this time around, he happily obliged and gave us a glimpse into his relationship with his parents. On days when he is home, he will usually pay attention to ‘small things’ such as whether his mother’s clothes are properly coordinated or whether her hairstyle looks good. Perhaps, it is precisely because of these ‘subtle’ life experiences that Andy was able to step up to the challenge of playing his character Roger in«A Simple Life».

ND: Towards your parents, are you the type who expresses your affection in a direct manner or a more unspoken one?

AL: I’m actually quite direct, but not the kissing and hugging kind. When it comes to showing concern for them, I’m very direct.

ND: How direct? You mean ‘directly’ saying ‘I love you’?

AL: No, no. I rarely say ‘I love you’ – in fact, I don’t need to say it because my dad already does..hahaha! I express my concern for them through my actions.

ND: What type of ‘actions’?

AL: Actions that show I care. For example, when my mom buys a new outfit that I feel doesn’t match well, I would help her think of ways to coordinate it and actually help her prepare it. Sometimes, I would help think of her hairstyle too. My mom’s hair is pure white, very beautiful -- she doesn’t like it though because she feels it makes her look old, but because I liked it, one time she kept it like that for almost 2 years! Also, they didn’t want to come live with me at first because they felt that if they lived with me, they won’t be able to have any friends over.

ND: Why would their friends not be able to visit if they lived with you?

AL: When I’m at home, they feel that having people visit is not convenient because their friends would see me dressed casually in shorts and I wouldn’t look like I do in public – that’s why they really want to live by themselves. But I didn’t heed their wishes – I ‘forced’ them to come live with me because I wanted them near me, I wanted to know if they’re healthy or sick – I don’t want them living out there by themselves.

ND: Most Hong Kong households have housekeepers – they could help take care of your parents.

AL: My mom doesn’t like to utilize housekeepers, so my sister is usually the one who takes care of her, however she usually has to leave by 7pm to return home and take care of her own family – that means there is a certain period of time where no one is there to take care of my parents. That’s why I don’t agree – I want them to stay with me, otherwise I’ll feel pressure worrying about them. I need to see them beside me every day in order for me to feel at ease.

ND: Deanie Ip says that you’ve never really grown up and that you’re like a big kid at heart, constantly teasing and playing around. Are you that way with your parents too?

AL: Haha! That’s my personality! It’s not that I haven’t grown up – I definitely have. But I feel that social interaction between people is important. I have moments when I’m very serious about things – when I’m working for instance – but sometimes there are also playful moments. The actresses who work with me would probably say the same thing as Deanie -- I could be talking seriously about a matter with them and the next minute, I’m teasing them and trying to make them laugh….that’s just the way I am. In front of my parents, I’m just like any other 50 year old son – not particularly childish or playful – just being my ordinary self.

Topic of Interest: Andy Lau on becoming a father

Earlier this year, during one of his fan club gatherings, Andy Lau admitted to his fans that his wife was pregnant. Andy finally becoming a father was huge news for the Media, however in the months since the announcement, no matter how much the Media hounded him, Andy still would not reveal much about his wife’s condition.

ND: This year, you will become a father. Have you ever thought about what kind of father you’d be? The strict type or the easy-going type?

AL: I don’t know…actually I don’t really want to know. I prefer to just let things take its natural course and keep it as ordinary as possible, so I haven’t really thought too much about it.

ND: Earlier, we talked about how your parents created a good family environment for you growing up. From the perspective of a father-to-be, what do you feel you’ve learned from your own father?

AL: I feel that for all matters, it’s best to wait until it appears before trying to analyze it – it’s not necessary to think so much into things so early. Plus, the way each person interacts with one another is different – I can’t be constantly thinking about how to apply my dad’s way of interacting to all other matters.

ND: Right now, waiting for the baby to arrive, are you nervous?

AL: Of course there will be [nervous feelings].

ND: Are you seeking out any tips from friends who are already parents?

AL: I feel that the way each person lives their lives is very different and what each person wants in life is different as well. I will follow my heart and my path will be a happy one. For those who are concerned or worried about me -- I will follow my own path….no need to worry!
