Australian teacher accused of tying up student (AP)

PERTH, Australia – An Australian teacher accused of tying a 5-year-old boy to a chair in front of his classmates as punishment for misbehaving has been suspended while the case is investigated, education officials said Wednesday.

Police in Western Australia state received a report that the teacher at Avonvale Primary School in Northam, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) northeast of Perth, used a jump rope to tie the child to a chair last week.

The state Education Department's Standards and Integrity unit is investigating the allegations, said Eamon Ryan, the unit's director. The teacher was suspended immediately after the department learned about the complaint, he said.

Education officials have not released the teacher's name.

Education Department Director General Sharyn O'Neill said the teacher's alleged behavior was unacceptable.

"Parents send their children into the care of teachers five days a week, and I think it is reasonable for parents to expect that those children will be well looked after," O'Neill told reporters.

Last year, a teacher in the Western Australia town of Kalgoorlie was reprimanded and ordered to get counseling after covering the mouths of nine students with sticky tape to keep them from talking.
