PANMUNJOM, Korea – North Korea says it has handed over the remains of a British pilot shot down during the Korean War.
The North's official Korean Central News Agency says the remains of Desmond Fredrick William Hinton were given to British officials Wednesday at the village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone.
The British Embassy in Seoul says the remains will be sent to a U.S. facility for forensic testing.
Britain says it cannot discuss the identity of the pilot until that testing takes place.
The North says Britain asked in 2002 for Hinton's remains to be unearthed at the request of his family. Hinton was shot down in 1952 while on a bombing run targeting railway infrastructure.
